Flat White and a Grateful Heart

Today, I drove a friend to her doctor's appointment. I'm writing this while waiting for her at Pablo Café, and I honestly can't stop smiling. I'm just so happy because I was able to do something for someone I care about. Maybe it sounds mundane to many people, but to me, it made today a very good day.

Her usual driver wasn't available because her sister needed him for an important medical appointment with her daughter. If you're from Metro Manila, especially Makati, you'll know that finding parking can sometimes feel harder than the drive itself. Somehow, I found a parking space right in front of Pablo Café, just across the street from the clinic. How rare is that? 😸

The weather has been just as interesting. It was raining a while ago, and now the sun is shining so brightly that you'd think it had been sunny all morning. I'm sitting by the window with a flat white, watching people go about their day, and quietly thinking about how good life feels today.

The past few weeks have been filled with physical therapy, and today I'm feeling so much better. Recovery can be slower than we'd like, so it's easy to overlook the small improvements until one day you realize that your body is moving a little easier than before. I'm genuinely thankful that I'm able to take care of myself and that I'm getting stronger little by little.

It also reminded me how much I already have to be grateful for. I may not be as wealthy as many people I know, but I'm comfortable, and that's already more than enough for me. I have work that I enjoy, people I love, good health that's steadily improving, and a really good cup of coffee in front of me. Honestly, that's a wonderful combination.

Speaking of coffee, I'm really enjoying Pablo's flat white today. A couple of years ago, it felt surprisingly difficult to find a decent flat white in the Philippines. I used to joke that I'd have to fly to Hong Kong just to enjoy one. These days, they're almost everywhere, and I'm not complaining one bit. It's funny how life quietly changes for the better without us even noticing.

Lately, work has also been bringing me a lot of joy. I'm working on something that's keeping me happily busy, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. Hopefully, one day, the things I'm creating will bring a little joy and comfort to other people too. For now, I'm simply grateful that I get to do work I genuinely enjoy.

While waiting for my friend, I found myself wishing for something very simple. I hope all of my friends and I get to live very, very long lives. I hope we have many more afternoons like this—driving each other to appointments, sharing coffee, laughing over ordinary things, and simply being there whenever someone needs us.

Life doesn't always have to be extraordinary to be beautiful. Sometimes, a flat white, an unexpected parking space in Makati, and the chance to help a friend are more than enough to fill my heart with gratitude. If life continues to give me afternoons like this, I think I'll be just fine.
