Why Sailing Fascinates Me

The sea has never been far from my life. Several members of my family have spent a great deal of time on the water, and I’ve grown up hearing stories, seeing boats, and developing a familiarity with the world that surrounds them. Despite that, I never actually learned how to sail myself. I’ve spent time on sailboats, picked up a few knots here and there, become familiar with some sailing terms, and watched enough sunrises and sunsets from the water to understand the appeal. Even so, there is a significant difference between enjoying a sail and knowing how to sail a boat, and I remain firmly in the beginner category.

Recently, I’ve started having a little more time to focus on things that genuinely interest me. Somewhere along the way, sailing found its way into my thoughts again. The more I thought about it, the more fascinating it became. I liked the idea of learning a completely new skill and spending more time on the water. After all, I only get one life. It seems reasonable to fill at least part of it with adventure.

I have no plans of becoming a competitive sailor. I don’t have dreams of joining races or setting records. My ambitions are much simpler. I’d like to learn how to sail properly, earn a sailing license, and become competent enough to enjoy the experience with confidence. There is also a practical side to it. If I ever find myself in the middle of the ocean with the captain mysteriously unavailable, I’d prefer knowing what to do rather than becoming part of the problem. Let us all hope that particular scenario remains entirely fictional.

I did consider learning how to fly. Some of my younger cousins are already pilots, which made aviation feel like a natural option to explore. Then I spent some time looking more closely at the aircraft they fly and realized that, for now, the sea appeals to me far more. Perhaps it’s because I enjoy swimming. Perhaps it’s because I’ve spent my life surrounded by islands. Perhaps it’s because there is something uniquely satisfying about watching the horizon from the deck of a boat. Whatever the reason, sailing won the argument.

The amusing part is that I haven’t even started sailing lessons yet, and my imagination is already making plans. Manila to Palawan sounds wonderful. Sailing around Hong Kong sounds equally tempting. Valencia immediately comes to mind whenever I think about Spain. The East Sea has entered the conversation too. If Still Poetry House grows the way I hope it will, I may eventually spend more time in Korea. Since Korea may become one of the places I work from in the future, my imagination has already started sketching routes that are probably years ahead of schedule. Somewhere in those plans, there is also a 45-foot catamaran waiting patiently for me to become far more qualified than I currently am. Fortunately, dreams are free, and sailing lessons come before all of that.

This blog exists because I know exactly what happens whenever I become interested in something. I start collecting notes, definitions, checklists, recommendations, articles, observations, and answers to questions that nobody asked except me. Before long, everything disappears into a maze of folders, bookmarks, screenshots, and forgotten notes. Creating this section of my website seemed like a much better solution.

Here you’ll find sailing basics, sailing terms, knots, boats, gear, destinations, lessons learned, useful references, and whatever else I discover along the way. Some articles may be practical. Some may be highly specific. Some may exist simply because future Casey will need the information again. If you happen to find something useful here as well, that’s a welcome bonus.

Welcome aboard.
